SECOND BOOK: “The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency” by Alexander McCall Smith

We wanted to provide some variety for the second book so we went with a mystery book that is based in Botswana.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is the “first novel in Alexander McCall Smith’s widely acclaimed The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series tells the story of the delightfully cunning and enormously engaging Precious Ramotswe, who is drawn to her profession to help people with problems in their lives.”

AGBALẼ EVELIA (BOOK 2) SUMMARY for ƐƲƐ BOOK CLUB:

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith

Welcome to the Ewe book club brought to you by the Heritage Center Junction.

At the intersection of community, culture, prosperity and wellness.

Our mission is to encourage and promote the goodness of the Ewe language and culture.

One way we are doing this is encouraging intellectual discussions in our mother tongue and coming together to discuss books.

Each month we select a book to read and read a portion of the book each week.

Then we meet each week to discuss that portion of the book.

Our discussions are solely in Ewe but we do offer help if you need help with a word or phrase.

We have completed our second book of the book club with attendees from across the world.

Our attendees included native and fluent ewe speakers who brought their thoughtful perspectives each week, and our attendees also included those interested in improving their fluency in ewe who came to just listen and share what they could.

Our second book was The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.

We wanted to explore a different genre for our second book: mystery.

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is the first in a series of detective books by Mr. Smith based on a female private detective agency in Botswana.

The main character of the book is Mme Precious Ramotswe, an intelligent woman who started her own business, a private investigator business in Botswana. And the book begins with her background and life experiences and challenges leading up to her starting her own business. The book presents different cases that she solves and the different characters she interacts with along the way.

Some of the topics that arose during our discussion included:

  • perseverance and reinventing oneself

  • African independence days and what were some of the book club members’ memories of that day, and for those that were not born yet then what stories their families have shared from that day

  • family dynamics

  • importance of discussing sex education and healthy and safe romantic relationships with our children

  • importance of bringing to light domestic violence and violence against women and not minimizing it

  • women’s role in the community

  • the detriment to society and our cultures when people stay silent about things that are wrong out of fear or shame

  • which case we liked best and which cases we thought were the most clever

We hope you will join us and invite your family and friends to join us too.
